Alcohol, can cost you money and your dignity!

Buying drink can leave you poor
A CRUCIAL part of uni life is going to parties and having fun. After-all, this is supposed to be the best time of your life right? Truth is, it costs money and on many occasions, your dignity.

In years to come, you're going to reflect on your university experience. Some bits will make you cringe, other bits will make you laugh. I can guarantee, both reactions will stem from alcohol related memories.

Alcohol is going to be stored in the fridges, cupboards or any part of a student's kitchen. But how much does this cost?
Jamie Fuller, second year student of Portsmouth University, says: " In my first year, I spent ridiculous amounts on alcohol, it would most definitely be part of my weekly shop.

"But since coming into the second year, I've been a lot more focused on deadlines - therefore going out hasn't been much of a priority."

Supermarket branded alcohol is usually cheaper, for instance, a 75ml bottle of vodka is under £10. If you want to buy the more mainstream brand (Smirnoff) it's going to be nearer the £20 mark. The thing is, most students go out at least three to four times a week - so this sum of money could triple?

Ben Lauzon, a first year student, who lives at home, says: "I'm not going to lie, I do enjoy a good night out.
"I tend to pre-drink at home because it's cheaper, many of the clubs are out to rip you off with drink prices."

Some students tend to stick to cheaper alcohol in general, saving money is one priority but actually feeling the full effects is another. Francine Walker, a first year student in Canterbury adds: " I buy a large bottle of Lambrini for a night out.
"My aim is to get drunk, and for £3, Lambrini does the job. So for me, alcohol doesn't drain my money."

The moral is, students aren't going to stop drinking, purely because it's a part of being young. But, the expense can make a student spend - or more so spend money in clubs in order to get a quick fix.

Stick to the cheaper brands, and look out for deals.
